How Successful
Businesses Will Compete
And Win In The New Millennium
"If we are to achieve
results never before accomplished, we must employ methods never before
attempted."
Sir Francis Bacon
Our information
society feeds on new products and services, which are a direct result
of new ideas. As reflected in the US Patent Office statistics below,
the pace at which companies must innovate is quickening. Successful
businesses need new ideas to remain competitive at developing and
delivering the new products and services that their customers demand.
Businesses also need new ideas to develop better business solutions and
to improve the way they conduct business.
The United States
Patent Office granted the first patent in 1790, since then it has
granted more than 6,338,000 patents. The number of US patents issued
from 1790 to 1976 (186 years) was approximately 3,900,000. From 1976 to
2002 (26 years) the number of US patents issued was approximately
2,398,000. This represents a 61% increase in US patents in only 26
years.
The
transformation from industrial society to information society, is
forcing companies to reinvent themselves in order to remain
competitive. Companies have reorganized, merged with other companies,
formed strategic alliances, hired the best talent, down sized and right
sized several times. Companies have acquired every competitive
advantage to be gained from deploying the latest communication systems,
high speed computers, fast networks, automated manufacturing and
robots. These aggressive reinvention measures helped companies become
lean, efficient and technological equals to their competitors, at least
for a period of time. Now the competitive advantage must come from
another source. Harnessing the total creative brainpower of the
company’s knowledge workers and applying it to achieve the
challenging goals ahead. In the new millennium the most powerful
competitive advantage a company can have, is being very good at
creative thinking.
Throughout
history many people have shared the common misconception, that a person
is either born creative or is not and that nothing can be done to
improve a persons creativity. Modern scientific research has produced
many insights into creative thinking. Most importantly science has
shown that creative thinking skills can be learned. Many self-help
books are available for improving creative thinking ability. There are
also a variety of seminars, workshops and training programs available
to companies for improving the creative thinking skills of their
employees.
Brainstorming is
the most common creative thinking method used in businesses today.
While brainstorming offers some benefits it also has its limitations.
Brainstorming requires a group of people for conducting a creative
thinking session, therefore it lacks the flexibility of being used by
an individual working independently or at a time and location of their
choosing, such as at their office desk, at home or while traveling.
Also the fast pace of brainstorming does not lend itself to deep,
contemplative and reflective creative thinking, which so often leads to
new ideas.
