"Your imagination is your preview of life's coming
attractions."
Albert Einstein
Throughout
history many people have shared the common misconception, that a person
is either born creative or is not and that nothing can be done to
improve a persons creativity.
Modern scientific research has produced many insights into creative
thinking. Most importantly science has shown that creative thinking
skills can be learned. Science
describes two distinct types of thinking, Provocative thinking and
Logical thinking. Provocative thinking is scarce in modern society.
This scarcity is directly related to the bias of our educational
institutions toward cultivating Logical thinking over Provocative
thinking.
By
studying the history of ideas science has found that new ideas and
breakthroughs are often created by mistake or accident. Observing the
mistake or accident provokes and stimulates the mind to change
perspective and view the situation in a new way. This creates a new
pattern in the brain, which is a new concept or a new idea. As
information is learned the human brain stores it in patterns to form
memories. As additional information is learned the brain creates new
patterns and revises the existing patterns related to the new
information.
Research on how the mind creates concepts and ideas by observing a
mistake or accident has lead to the discovery of Provocative thinking.
Provocative thinking is a method of using systematic techniques for
changing perceptions to create new concepts and new ideas, on demand.
Provocative
thinking involves combining information from existing patterns in new
ways, then restructuring the existing patterns to include the new
combination of information and creating new patterns, which is the
essence of creativity. This type of thinking has also been described as
Lateral thinking. When we use Creator Studio we are doing Provocative
thinking.
An
example of a creative thinking method is the Random Word method, which
is a form of Provocative thinking. This method is used to radically
shift our thinking far from the normal way that we might think about a
given situation. To use the Random Word method we choose a word at
random. Then we use our imagination to find a relationship between the
random word and the situation we are focusing our thinking on. Finding
this relationship changes our perspective of the knowledge we already
have and combines in it new ways to create new ideas. In more technical
terms, using the imagination to find this relationship has combined
information from existing patterns in the brain in new ways,
restructured the existing patterns to include the new combination of
information and created new patterns. A new concept or a new idea has
been created.
Logical
thinking, also known as analytical thinking, involves refining and
verifying the accuracy of these existing patterns and developing
workable solutions for implementing them. This type of thinking has
also been described as Vertical thinking. When we do mathematics we are
doing Logical thinking.
Both Provocative thinking and Logical thinking have great value.
Provocative thinking helps us create ideas. Logical thinking helps us
refine ideas into workable solutions. Together they help us make the
best use of our knowledge.
Provocative thinking allows a person to use their imagination to change
their perspective and transform the knowledge they already have into
something totally different, something entirely new.
In 1450 Johan Guttenberg used his imagination to change his perspective
of the coin punch and the wine press, and transformed the knowledge he
already had of these devices into something totally different,
something entirely new. He invented the printing press with moveable
type.
Creator Studio creative thinking software for
Business, lets you use Provocative thinking and your
imagination to change your perspective, and transform your knowledge in
new ways to create new ideas.
To make the best use of Creator Studio and its Provocative thinking
methods a person needs a positive open minded attitude toward creative
thinking. An attitude that applies the following convictions.
When
doing creative thinking I will:
- Postpone
evaluating and passing judgment on my ideas until a later time.
- Create
ideas and record them, whatever they may be.
- Recognize
my ideas as possible solutions or stepping stones to possible solutions.
- Recognize
that any solution I think of may be just one among many possible
solutions.
- Shift
my perspective repeatedly to create new ideas and explore alternative
possible solutions.
This
positive open minded attitude frees the mind to create ideas and
explore ideas without the burden of being practical at the same time.
The time for evaluating and judging ideas, and for being practical is
after the creative thinking has been done.
Creator Studio offers a variety of Creativity
Studios. Each Studio is specialized for achieving a specific
type of creative thinking task and composed of a select group of Creativity
Tools. Creator Studio provides creative thinking tools that
